I think I remember reading that there is a traditional meal for NY Day, for good luck or something.

Does anyone observe this? If so, is there a standard meal? If not, whatcha havin'?

I just heard this on the radio going to work on Friday. The reason that people eat pork is because when pigs root around in the dirt they always move forward and that's what you want to do in the New Year. Chickens and turkeys scratch backwards, so that doesn't work. Didn't hear anything about beef but I'm guessing it's because they graze from side-to-side while moving forward.

So why saurkraut? I never did hear of a reason for it.

We'll be eating black-eyed peas today. But I may be running out to get some of that cabbage, too. ;)

Sauerkraut comes from cabbage, so maybe that's where the green money comes from????

That makes sense, Aki. We have a lot of European immigrants (ancestors) in the north and that's probably why they used saurkraut, instead of cabbage.

I woke up at 6 this morning and realized I forgot to soak my beans. :slaphead: So I did it then. It should be fine.

I've done the quick-soak. I can't really tell the difference. :)

It should be fine. The beans don't actually need to cook for too long, so if I start it at 2:30 or 3 for dinner it should be ok. I've done the quick soak before, too, but I worry about gas.

ITA - I read somewhere that soaking doesn't really reduce the gas, but I'm not taking any chances, I always do the overnight soak if I can.
