OK, so here's my idiotic confession of the week. We aren't big ham people. I don't dislike it, it's just not something I ever buy/cook/etc.
So if I want to make split pea soup, should I make ham earlier in the week? And if so, how? My only experience with ham is one of those big ol' things people make at Christmas. Is that what I'd need to do?
:D

Sometimes you can buy just a ham bone, esp at honey baked. If you don't like ham, then just get a ham bone or use ham hocks (which are in the meat case at the grocery store). Some people also substitute sausage or bacon instead.

Yep. But you can get like half hams and smaller too I think.
And you can put ham in everything.

:agree: Me, usually.
I mean, I use chicken stock, but no additional meat.

I do buy ham hocks for my hoppin' john, though. :eat: Ham hock boiled in water for a couple of hours makes a delicious stock. :eat:
Allison, I have 4 or more ham bones in my freezer with every intention to make soup, but I haven't./wishes you lived closer

My mom tries every Easter to have me keep the bone. And every Thanksgiving to keep the turkey bones.
No. I'm never going to use them so I'm not keeping them.
When I thaw the freezer out in the next week or two, I'm pitching them out. They take up too much room.
I have a few ham bones in my freezer too. We rarely eat ham, so I know they need thrown out. I never use them in soup or beans or anything, I will add bacon if it needs some flavor.

When I used to work at Heavenly Ham (now called Honey Baked) we used to sell ham bones and they sold like wildfire. One time a woman came in and bought a whole garbage bag full of them (the bag was clean and the bones were individually wrapped, of course). She spent $160 on bones. :indiff:
