View Full Version : Pumpkin shortage?!

Dar
09-18-2009, 09:40 AM
Alison's favorite breakfast, and what she has pretty much every morning, is a pumpkin chocolate chip muffin. I have to make a batch every 1-2 months. So, I try to always have ingredients on hand.

I've been searching for canned pumpkin for about a month, and thought for sure it was by the other canned pie fillings, but hadn't seen it. I finally remembered to ask an associate at the grocery store today.

There's a shortage. :indiff: They won't have any for another month, at least. :omg: Don't they realize Thanksgiving is coming?! I love baking with pumpkin!

Anyone else heard of it?

Oh, wow! I've been having trouble finding pumpkin, too! I found ONE can at several stores. :getyou:

Angie

Nope but I was getting ready to make some of these too.

I'll let you know what I find out. :D

I'm gonna make it a priority to hunt for some today. I was planning on making muffins for my kids for snack at school, but, like I said, no pumpkin.

I ususally buy it at Costco this time of year, but they haven't had any at all.

KarenMA

I can't find canned pumpkin either. I mix it in Oreo's kibble. Fortunately, when I find it, I buy a bunch so for me, it's not critical yet.

Dar

I just looked in the news websites... it's a nationwide shortage.

I bought out our local ALDI's late last fall because they had it marked down as a seasonal item. I think I bought close to 48 cans. I may have half of that left.

It looks like you can order it by the case (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=libby's+pumpkin&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=vJGzSs2YAoqulAfbopSFDw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4)online still. For anyone who keeps a big stock of it on hand, that might not be a bad idea.

Out of stock.... out of stock... out of stock...

Allison

EVERY day she asks for one. It's all she ever wants.

Me: Are you sure? No cereal? Oatmeal? Ice cream?
Alison: No, just a chocolate muffin with butter, please.

The name fits: http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/detail.aspx?ID=128665

Is it just canned pumpkin or pumpkins in general?

Cuz the little mom and pop flower place has some out already.

Dar
09-18-2009, 10:17 AM
Well, I guess the pie/canned pumpkin crop is supplied by the Midwest (and West, maybe?) and they had bad weather which led to low crops.

However, probably local crops will be fine. I know that they grow pumpkins locally, too. But they are not the pie variety.

I stopped at Sweetbay since they are right by the post office. At least 30 cans. :wtf:

Karen

At lunch today, I went on a canned pumpkin reconnaissance. Colassal fail.

Schnucks-spots for 3 brands, none on shelves

Trader Joe'sl-spot for 1 brand, none on shelf
Whole Foods-spot for 2 brands, none on shelf

My grocery store had plenty about a week ago, but I think I'm going to go and buy it all. I'll keep you posted (and see if I can ship some out if it's needed).

Dar

I'll go buy more, too, now that I've found some. If someone is desperately needing some right now.

Sonny

This thread is giving me the giggles. Before PW I only used pumpkin for pie on Thanksgiving (and that was usually the pie mix, not straight pumpkin). But because of recipes here, I now usually have pumpkin sausage soup in my freezer, we make pumpkin bread regularly, and I've been known to make a pumpkin loaf or two. :D I have two cans in my cupboard, but I'd better keep my eyes peeled at the store.

Maeve

Funny this should come up now. One of my friends was watching a special yesterday on pumpkin growing, and apparently that's a really cut-throat business. I never would have guessed. One guy's entire crop was ruined because some other guy laced it with... something. I forget what. Poison? Not poison, anyway, but something that killed all the pumpkins. If I'd actually watched it, instead of hearing about it second-hand, I'd probably remember. (I'm too young to be forgetting things!)

Anywho. I wonder how much stuff like that contributed to the pumpkin shortage?

Oy. Ok. Like if you are heading toward the check out, on one of those rows across from the camis and underwear. Like 2 or 3 aisles before the chips aisle...Or somewhere around there. It was close to the end of the aisle.

Maeve

Heh. I was at the grocery buying stuff to bake, and was on the baking aisle (obviously) and they had tons of pumpkin. In fact, it's on sale this week. (This was at Shoppers.) I've never cooked with pumpkin, but you guys have me so intrigued that I bought some. Now I just have to figure out what to make!

I mentioned this about 2 weeks ago when I wanted to make the soup and muffins! Publix said that they (Libby's) are doing different packaging and that they are expecting more pumpkin in October. I went to Sweetbay and found the larger cans there.

And Dar- you make a batch every 1-2 months of muffins??? I think my batch was done in 4 days. And that was just with ME eating them!

Niki
09-19-2009, 07:55 AM
I have a can in my cupboard. I think I'll make either pumpkin bread or these muffins today. Syd looooves pumpkin. Then, I'm going to the store and hunting for some.

I heard on the news here recently that there would be a pumpkin shortage in the fall due to the weather this summer. Think it was related to buying whole pumpkins... didn't realize it was nationwide.
Haven't noticed a canned shortage though. I always have canned pumpkin in the pantry. Made pumpkin sausage soup Thursday, went shopping today and bought 2 more to replace what I had used... they had plenty.

It would be a sad winter without some PS soup :(

Samantha

i think i will try these, i picked up some pumpkin to try the soup but i think i will try these as well! i didn't realize it only took one can to make 3 loaves! if that is the case if everyone likes it i will make a bunch! how long can you keep them in the freezer?

Danielle
09-20-2009, 08:57 PM
I made 4 loafs last night, 2 are gone already. I told the kids they could have some bread a little bit ago, I had no idea they had a whole loaf until I went into the kitchen!

Dar

ummm, it asks for punking puree, i bet that is different from pumpkin pie filling isn't it? i asked nick to get it for me and he came back with pie filling :stars: is it the same thing or do i need to go back to the store?

Angie
09-21-2009, 11:27 AM
It's different. You need the regular pumpkin.

Dar
09-21-2009, 11:27 AM
Pumpkin pie filling is different than 100% pumpkin. The pie filling already has spices and other things added to it.

Samantha
09-21-2009, 11:31 AM
so will the pie filling work if i leave out the spices?/ not really wanting to go back to the store

Amy
09-21-2009, 11:35 AM
Read the label. It probably has sweetener, too. So, it might work if you omit sugar AND spices.

Amy
09-21-2009, 11:35 AM

ingredients are : pumpkins, sugar, vegetable oil, salt, and spices

Amy
09-21-2009, 11:40 AM
Sooo...it might work if you omit all that stuff. But, the recipe won't be the same. It will probably be fine, though, imo.

Amy
09-21-2009, 11:40 AM
Considering the muffins I was going to make were just cake mix mixed with pumpkin puree.

Danielle
09-21-2009, 11:41 AM
I used pumpkin pie filling for mine actually. I did add extra spices and brown sugar. I kind of tasted it until it seemed right, raw eggs and all.

Amy
09-21-2009, 11:42 AM
There ya go. They are probably pretty sweet, huh? I was tempted to just grab the damn filling at the store yesterday.

Samantha
09-21-2009, 11:43 AM
thats what i figure, it has all the same ingredients as the recipe i would just have to add a few items... which is the part i am unsure about. Also, i think i may only have one bread pan as i am lazy and usually use my bread machine so if this recipe makes 3 loaves and needs to cook for an hour if i mix it all do you think the mix would be ok waiting for the other loaf to be done?

Samantha
09-21-2009, 11:44 AM
great, i was about to make it when i noticed filling. But yay i am going to try it this morning before i start my daily cleaning. that way it can cook as i go.

Danielle
09-21-2009, 11:45 AM

I forgot all about pumpkin bread until this thread. I made some last fall and it was devoured as soon as it came out of the oven. I think when my nephews went home they packed the last loaf in their suitcases. I'll have to see if there's any pumpkin at the store.

Can babies eat pumpkin puree? I wonder if Bailey would like that.

I got some store brand at Wegman's last night, but they only had the 29oz cans, so I grabbed two of those. Then I looked at that pumpkin bread recipe (which is what I want to make) and it only takes a 15 oz can. I am thinking about doubling the recipe...my kitchenaid should be able to handle it...but damn. That's a lot of pumpkin bread. I think I would make 3 or 4 loaves in disposable pans (and freeze a couple), and a bunch of muffins for us to take to work. Oh, and I am seeing my mom on Saturday, so I could give her a loaf too.

I read the article the other day and if you make it down to the bottom, it says that the fields that Trader Joes and Whole Foods pumpkins are in weren't effected (affected?..I suck that getting these two right). And I think other brands are ok too.

Cans of Libby - $1.49 (limit 2 :nono:) at the local grocery

Whole Foods - $1.19 - no limit - plenty on shelves and front display

Dani
11-22-2009, 09:43 AM
There was lots of pumpkin at my Publix just now. I saw the large cans first (Libby's) and grabbed 3. Then I saw the smaller ones where they are usually kept and grabbed 1. That should be good for the month, along with the other 4 cans I have in the pantry.
