I'm GPS dumb. I admit it.

We are looking to get one for our kayaking adventures. I think I have it narrowed down to a Garmin eTrex Venture. Handheld, waterproof, seems to have a nice screen, highly rated.

So, once I buy the unit, I'm assuming I have to buy software for it? And I have to buy software that is specifically for waterways/ the coast, right? Can someone enlighten me? :D

I don't think you normally have to buy software for it. Ours had most maps loaded on it already and came with an SD card to download more updated maps online for free. I'm not sure about waterways though.

gps usually comes with the software but you have to buy updates for it

I know the Garmin units we have at work have online updates.

The more research I'm doing shows that for what I want/need (with tide tables included), I'm going to be spending more money. :indiff:

I don't know about detailed water charts.

the e-trex is a good basic model, there are others with lots of bells and whistles, just depends on how much you want to spend.
