View Full Version : Amish Friendship bread starter
I used to have a starter for Amish Friendship bread that I loved. I got burnt out on it after a while and quit feeding it. Now I wish I still had it. Does anyone know how to start one? I've read several various recipes online, but they are all different. Surely one of you has the "right" one, right? :D

Yum!
/sorry, no help. :D
I don't. But I lived on that stuff one summer. :eat:
So, everyone likes it, but no one knows how to make it? :indiff:
I guess I'll try some I found online and pray for the best.
 I've made it, I just don't remember the recipe. I am SUCH a sucker for bread, I need to never make it.
That was our problem. We'd eat it all day long. I made the cinnamon version that had vanilla pudding in it. It was so delicious. I decided the only way not to eat it was to quit making the starter...so now I have to figure out how to start the vicious cycle again.
My MIL gave me the starter to begin with, but she dumped hers for the same reason as me. I was counting on her to keep it going!
This one has a lot of stars...http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Amish-Friendship-Bread-Starter/Detail.aspx
That's the one I printed out. For some reason, I trust it. The starter's pretty basic, so I don't think it can be messed up too terrible. I'm going to start it tonight and impatiently wait the 10 days.
A bread that has cinnamon and vanilla pudding????
*better off NOT knowing*

OMG, that stuff is so freaking good. We made like 319 loaves one summer.
It doesn't freak you guys out that the milk in it sits on the counter for days?
Or that when you divide it and pass it along, each time it has milk in it that gets older and older?

The yeast and sugar ferment with the milk so it starts a process similar to that of sour dough and the milk won't sour. It feeds the yeast and starts the chemical process.
(I forget the name of the chemical process LOL)
hmmm...maybe as a homeschooler with an interest in science I have no choice but to make this. Science and all...:right:

In the name of science, it's only fair to your children. I was going to make it last night, but didn't have a chance. I'll start it tonight. :)
Oh yeah, yesterday I found a website that will send you the powder form of the starter and you just add water for a steal of $27  Who would do that when there are tons of recipes on how to make it yourself?!
