Amanda,

I want to make longies for newborn Charlotte. Do you have any suggestions for sizes (waist, hips, rise, etc)?

I probably want to shoot for big newborn but not quite small. Does that make sense?

yeah, I made some for Kaci's Barrett. Did you see the pics over there? anyway, they were shorties in a sm/med. I made the waist 16 because I didn't want to use DPNs. there's a chart at the end of the wonderpants pattern. I think I did sm/med which calls for hips to be 18. I think I made the rise 15. I don't know what to do for inseam. Maybe search HC for somethat are for sale and look for measurements.

ok, so she's due in Jan. Which means it will be longie season for a long time after Charlotte is born. I'd make them on the big size of small. I'd hate for her to only get a few weeks out of them.

So instead of newborn/sm go almost to a sm/med?

Is there anyone that actually uses them on a newborn? I honestly can't imagine trying to fight with longies on a newborn, being sleep deprived and all. Tek and I debated this for a while, wondering if it would just be better to have them a small and let her grown into them vs something she could wear right away.

we used crocheted soakers when Mary was born. I forget the rise, but they only fit for 2 weeks. I made the small hips/waist again, with an inch added to the rise. Those lasted until she was 7 weeks old, then I did mediums with an inch added to that rise. That was all off the DD crochet pattern. Of course, crochet doesn't stretch as much as knit, which may be why she needed medium so soon.

Didn't you also use Tickle Turdle wraps? I also thought of making her one of those if you thought it would be useful.

Did you use your soakers under clothes?

I did use that wrap a little when she was tiny. It was easier to get on/off than a soaker.

we usually used soakers under those little open ended sacks/gowns. If I had another girl, I'd make a wool bag/sack and just use that with shirts.

Yes, but Charlotte lives in Texas. I was on a beach, in a bathing suit, in March in Texas.

That was in my head too. Which is making this harder for me.

I'm shooting for this baby to come on down in late December, if that matters. :) And while it IS warming up in March, I'm not getting my butt on a beach. Lisa's crazy. :) /hth.

In my defense, we were in Houston for his work, and went to Galveston.

We were tourists.

Alison wants a tax deduction!

I was inside so much after Mary was born. That's what I was thinking. As long as the inside temp is cool, longies are great. Plus you don't want heavy blankets on a baby anyway.

And, now that I think about, I don't think Dallas has quite the same winters as Houston (right?)

Houston is considerably more south than Dallas. Kinda like I am to Jacksonville. Doesn't Dallas get snow every few years? Or am I mistaken?

I would be more likely to put longies on her than shorties. At least through April. I'm cold natured, so she's going to be also - right? :right:

Allison ~ how cold do your winters get? /just curious

We usually have 1-3 ice storms in February.... I start wearing a jacket in November, gloves in December. There are some random days mixed in where it will get up to 65 or so, which are lovely, but I think that it gets cold. We just rarely see snow, but do see lots of sleet/hail/black ice.
