I thought I'd use Jen's method. the brown bled up onto the blue and the purple....it looks like baby poop. I'll take a pic once it cools.
    :bang: :bang:
It was freaking expensive yarn too.
Oh no!
*can't wait to see*

I am so overdyeing it tonight.
Is it that bad, or just not how you wanted it?
:D we should get a preview pic.
Oh no!!!
I guess that means you don't like the stovetop method?
Well, I tried the hotpour method a few nights ago from a link Lisa posted and I have been rinsing it for 2 days now and it will not rinse clear. I tried to make variations of pink/red. Didn't I tell myself never to do red again. :bang:
Jen, other than the rinsing thing how did the hot pour go?

Um, yeah. I did cuss you a bit.
waiting for John to upload a pic....his IM shows him away from the computer though.

:dunno: I am not sure if all the rinsing is because I did something on the hotpour wrong. I tried to use less koolaid because I had less yarn. But maybe I still used to much.
I just wish there was a faster way to get rid of the excess dye. I had to re-wrap the hank last night before I started rinsing again because it was getting sticky (felting just slightly). It is becoming a PITA. I haven't even taken pics because I might end of up trashing it.
I want to try the hot pour again but without red. I was really wanting something girlish with shades of pink.
Um, yeah. I did cuss you a bit.
Um, well, not my fault if you didn't do it right....:run:
:right:
Hmmm. Yeah. We need some pictures of yours too Jen.

see the top left? that's where the blue is supposed to start. but the brown ran into it. and it looks nasty. And the brown came out very uneven, which never has happened with MY method.
Will overdye late tonight.
Hmm. Yeah.
That is a little ugly.
:hide:
Although, so was mine. And wound up, it doesn't seem to be too hateful.
Just sayin'.
Well, I have never ever had a run like that. Ever. The most mine ever mixed was an inch or two overlap.
We can compare notes to see what you might have done different.
which color did you do first?

I did purple first then blue. brown last. I think I had the water up too high and that the pot was too small.
Oh well. I am now really excited about overdyeing it. Going to make the blue brighter/darker and add a pinch of purple while I am at it. Might add some black cherry to the purple and then try to get the brown to even out and be a bit richer.
So, if the brown hadn't bled, just given the logistics, do like my method at all?
I have never ever once worn gloves. :dunno:

I thought that it was going to give me a nice even color. Sometimes with my method it's hard to get the color even.
Yeah, if the brown would have turned out right, I would have been happy. The blue and purple looked fine until I did the brown. That hank is separated into 4 even parts. I did 1 part blue, 1 part purple and 2 parts brown. I think I needed a bigger pan. It was 6.5 oz of BFL.
As far as the brown not being even, you are right, that was probably the pot being too small for that much yarn.
How much vinegar did you put in the pot for each color?
Amanda Lou

um, I don't know. some. I soaked my yarn first like I always do because I was going to use my regular method. then I added that water to the pan. I never measure it. I just put "some" in.
I usually just put "some" in when I soak. I then discard all of that water and start with new for each color. On my last project (not counting the red crap from the other night), I used 3/4 cup of vinegar for each color (2oz section).

yeah, that sounds about right.
I did use fresh water each time. Oh well. after dinner I am going to let it soak again and then after Mary goes to bed I'll work on it. I hope I have enough KA left.

Jen's method should not be used with a toddler helping and when you are trying to do the prep work for dinner. I knew it was too small of a pan for the brown. lesson learned.
I think I saved it. It's in the oven right now.

Okay I'm a bit of a nut but I do like the brown just not with the purple and the green. I also happen to like the color variation in the brown itself. I think it adds depth to the things I knit but that is just me. :D

I could probably overdye the brown one more time (I added some green to it, but didn't have enough KA), but I think I'll leave it. I'm probably asking for trouble if I go at it again.
I really don't see any problem with the brown as it is. :dunno:
