View Full Version : Geocaching in July!
Has there already been one started? I didn't see one.
We went today for the first time in a long time. Had fun too.
Found 4 and DNF one. I came home and there was a note telling the owner to check on it, they thoguht it was gone.
I hope to take my parents on Sunday.
We haven't been a while-- they are all so far away now. I don't have an unfound within 20 miles.
I am planning on do a bunch on vacation, I already have loaded a ton for CT, ME, RI, and DE

We just did one. TONS of poison ivy.
Now I'm worried about caching in the summer with all the brush growth.

We did a 5-star last week....it wasn't very hard at all. We had to go to south station in Boston and connect to their wireless, find a page, and find the coords on the page. They were at the bottom of the page
I think it was a 5-star because you needed a laptop.
We did 7 in Rockport, MA on Sunday :D We're going to hide our first on Saturday :)

We haven't gone for a looooong time. We are going to do some caching on vacation...there are a few on an island in the lake we are staying at.
It seems too hot. I think geocaching is more of a spring/fall thing for me. :D

:agree:
Hiking in 90 degree weather with 90% humidity is not fun to me.
Yesterday it was 75 and breezy though.

We did a bunch on Father's Day, it was 92 degrees, the kids faded fast, but I threatened them not to grumble because this is what Dad wanted to do.
We have a bunch planned for our vacation in FL and we will be hiding our first one soon.
Kate, when will you be in DE?
DE is the first week of August

What do you guys usually wear for geocaching?
I live in flip flops, but I felt very inadequate when I saw the bushwacking/poison ivy and huge animal holes.
I also live in flip-flips but recently I have made the kids wear sock, tennis shoes and if possible jeans.
I just keep hearing that this is the worst year they know of for poison ivy.

Socks and tennis shoes for sure. (And I live in flip flops) and usually jeans. Cliff wears shorts because he gets too hot and B will wear either.
Oh, and we are taking my parents goecaching for the first time tomorrow.

ok, I just googled it:) Now I know what you are talking about!
:right:
We set out for a little cache this afternoon. Finding the place was...less than easy. By the time we had an idea of where we needed to be, Russ had to leave for work (he rode his bike).
After he left, the kids and I found the right road. A dirt road. We drove a couple of miles down it and found the trailhead.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/amy1000/Picture006.jpg
Our signal wasn't good at all, so we decided to just check the place out and go back tomorrow with Russ. There are three waterfalls we hiked () down to the first one. Actually only partway down, this picture is not at all capturing where we were. We were on a cliff  overlooking the falls, which are bigger than they look. :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/amy1000/Picture008.jpg
We decided to follow the trail some more and try to find the larger falls. As we were walking, the kids started spotting animal (?) tracks. They insisted that I take some pictures of them...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/amy1000/Picture015.jpg
By now, the kids are FREAKED out. Maggie is begging to go home and the boys were pretty scared. So we turn around and head back to our van.
Suddenly Alex yells "I see it!" Sure as shit he's spotted the cache. We didn't have any idea where to look and hadn't even loaded the coordinates!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/amy1000/Picture016.jpg
On the way home, we passed by Alder Dam.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/amy1000/Picture017.jpg
They are looking at me like I'm crazy because I said, "Ok everybody, say dam it!" /bad mom

We pulled off at the lake that is formed by the dam.

The boys are behind me on the other computer researching bigfoot. They are convinced he lives in the forest we were at today. :D
 that footprint!!!!!
and I am so proud that you hiked the waterfalls!
and tell Alex he can geocache with me any time-- he has great caching sense!!
We didn't get to go yesterday. My dad had to work on the house.
I want cool caches like that. Most of ours are micros.
:D So I mentioned to my girlfriend where we had gone caching today. She said that there had been bigfoot "sightings" there. So, that explains the footprints. :D I mean, it must be a fun place to put giant fake ones. They were still fun. She told me that before I even told her about them.
I found a news article. :D

Another Bigfoot sighted
Eatonville, Wash. Dispatch
Three campers near the Little Marshell River close to Murphy's property by Little Falls reported what they said may have been a Bigfoot last thursday night at dusk.
Lori Cormany of Tacoma smelled a "musky" odor and then saw a large, dark animal on the hillside. The men, Bill Russell and Dan Cormany, thought the animal must be a bear, and the woman said the creature stood upright on two legs.
One of the campers crossed the stream to get a closer look. He said the animal squatted, and had broad shoulders and a head. As the man came closer to the animal, it took off.
The campers reported the incident to the Eatonville Police Department at about 11 p.m. Thursday. Officiers went to the scene and checked, but found nothing. They said the campers didn't appear to be intoxicated or on drugs, and that they appeared shaken.
BTW, I don't think the cache that Alex found was the one that we were looking for. :D

Ok, so.
We might be getting a gps.

I know. A lot of them around here are micros hidden in little parks.
We have some that are bigger, but I don't know the area awell enough to plot a day out. I guess I could spend some time and do it. :indiff:
I do have about 5 loaded in a big state park not far from here. that is what we were going to do with my parents.
Amy, you should take Rebecca one day and introduce her to it.
My brother came over yesterday and wanted to know if my kids had been outside at all...apparently they are too white. :D So, we're going to spend some more time outside...if it stays dry.
Not knowing areas is a problem. We wasted most of the day figuring out where we needed to be.
Not knowing areas is a problem. We wasted most of the day figuring out where we needed to be.
B and I spent a lot of time driving around looking for where we needed to be one day only because I didn't know where streets led. I was following the GPS, but it does straight lines, not streets.

I should. :D I WISH that I would have taken them...or somebody to the pirate one. It was the COOLEST ever. It was a nice walk and not too strenuous. The cache was soooo well done, perfect for newbies.
Well, get on it.
Take them tomorrow. /pusher

Russ didn't go that day, I keep wanting to do it again but the kids would give it away. :D
Cliff wants to know why we didn't take the GPS when we went to Indiana. The route mapquest had him taking was closed for contsruction. He could have found his way with the GPS.
DUh. Didn't even think of it. We need to start leaving it in the car.

We looked at the car mount one because he travels. But for the money, the one we got works perfect.
I marked B's dad's house. He likes watching the way to our house. :D
The thing that was so awesome about the pirate one was all the little hidden clues. Right there. It was such a fun surprise each time we found one.

LMFAO! Anthony just came down from bed (where he should be sleeping :D ) with a complex plan for planting fake bigfoot prints all over Boy Scout camp next week.
He cracks me up. When we first got home, he was all about proving that bigfoot exists. Now he's part of the hoax. :D

Apparently, his leader has some experience with this. :right:

You're gonna help, right?
Sure. :D They already have a plan for scaring the new boys. Anthony was a new boy last year, so it's time to pay it forward.
Sure. :D They already have a plan for scaring the new boys. Anthony was a new boy last year, so it's time to pay it forward.
Man. I so need to be there.
I am good at that stuff.
The peel off mask was my favorite. B and his 2 friends were here and I had it half peeled off, came out of the bathroom and told B to find cliff, that my skin was falling off. :rolf: He still hasn't forgave me.
:nono: No girls allowed. :D
Today, when my younger kids were at the peak of fright, Anthony screamed something. He scared me so flucking bad. :D
It's pretty much how my family works.
When I was 13, I spent a week at girls camp. I used to scare my cabin-mates sooooo bad. One night I snuck away during campfire time. I waited in the rafters of the cabin and dropped down as they walked in. Good times. :D
That is how it works here too. :D
We live for pay backs.
Brandon is still seething about the time I told him that we missed his birthday. It was October 30th. I told him that when he was born we forgot the date so we made up the November 11th birthday. Then I told him that I found his birth certificate and his real birthday was October 23rd, and sorry, we missed it. Too bad, so sad./bad mom
I actually had to show him the birth certificate to prove I was joking.

((((Brandon)))) :p
I know. He is so abused.
And gullible.

LMAO!!!!
Russ got Anthony gooooood today. We were on the wrong trail and Russ and I noticed that we were going around in a circle, so he went back to sneak up on the boys. Anthony figured out his plan and tried to foil it. OF course Russ figured it out and hid from Anthony. It was awesome!
Ha! I just remembered a hilarious one from when I was a kid. My brother climbed on the roof of our house at night. We were all hanging out in the living room. He tapped on the skylight. When we saw him up there!!!! Holy CRAP! We were so freaked out.
I could go on and on.
My mom's family did it too. She always tells the story about sitting on a fence outside her brother's window at night. :D
Rebecca

I love stuff like that, but I'm not very creative. Dave does some of that kind of stuff, but sometimes it doesn't go over very well with the girls. He so needs a boy.
I'll send him one.
Anthony won't stop. He wants to get his hair cut before camp and save the hair for his prank.
You should hear him cackling.

[nerdy geocaching tip]
To get directions to a cache click on "view map", then click on "view results in google maps (beta)"
I do this when caching in cities :)
Alright. We found the falls. They were AWESOME! And a way easier hike than yesterday. Still steep, but there were steps.
The spot has been really abused. :( They've spraypainted nasty stuff on the rocks and left tons of garbage. It pisses me off.
Other than that, it was amazing!
Pics uploading now. :D
so --
did he find the real cache without a GPS or another one?
It was a different one. :D

I just remembered something that I think I'll keep tucked away in the geocaching thread. Austin was changing in the back of the van. I turned around and saw him exposed. I said "oh no I saw a peeny!" Russ was all "what's a peeny?" I explained that it was a teeny penis. Earlier we had been talking about "tweens" and telling the boys what that means, so I whispered to Russ "Anthony has a tweeny." He said..."uhhh...no, he doesnt." :indiff:

My sister just stopped by. Apparently she has been going with her friends (and Dustin? :right: ) to those falls forever. She said that Jimi Hendrix wrote some waterfall song there. :dunno: I don't know anything about JH's music. Although once I ******* **** and went to his grave with some friends. :right:

Yikes! Look at this log from a cache near my house! It's been moved now. It was in a park in a pretty urban area (as urban as we get out here in suburbia :D)
We found this one pretty easily, but not before we found the meth lab that was within 5 feet of it. No joke. We reported it to the Puyallup Police and later had to show them where it was. We got some really weird looks from all the people in the park as we walked around the lake followed by three police officers in uniform. We strongly suggest this cache is moved soon.
