My mom left today to go to Massachusetts because my Aunt died. I stopped by the house before she left. In a week, they will be back here in Missouri to pick up my son, my great nephew and me so we can go back to Pennsylvania for our family reunion. My mom handed me a package of 6 fly swatters and asked me to please decorate them so she can use them for prizes for the crazy bingo. I am so busy these days with divorce/Miles/school that I am definitely not feeling creative. Plus I have no vehicle to go get decorating supplies (or money, for that matter). I've googled and gone to Michael's and Hobby Lobby websites and thus far am not inspired. Anyone seen anything fun and different lately?

Maybe just glue some little decorations on there?

Yeah, Ana, that's probably what I'll end up doing. She wants me to crochet on them. I think that would just be ugly. Well, probably anything would be ugly. I might try to get a ride to Wally World and do something with ladybugs and/or bees.

I wish I could help, mmmommmy. I am anti-crafty.

NP Phoebe. I was talking to a friend today and she told me to put my husband's picture on them and was sure my relatives would then be more than happy to swat flies with them.

I am totally not crafty so take this with a grain of salt. Since this is for prizes at a family reunion in PA, how about decorating them with the them of your family or Penn. For instance, maybe some pics from the last family reunion and then maybe dress the border of the pics with rhinestones or something. For the PA theme, maybe some computer printed pics of the liberty bell, ... dressed up the same way.

Heres a snappy way to get rid of those stowaway flies that show up in the house.
As you make these during the chill of winter, enjoy thoughts of summertime! Though
fly swatters are functional, they are unsightly. These decorative covers create a con-
versation piece, and allow the handy fly swatter to be kept in a convenient location.
Covered fly swatters make fun, affordable gifts, and popular craft sale items.
You will need:
Plastic mesh
Scissors to cut the mesh and yarn
Large eyed blunt tip needles
Yarncolors needed for pattern (thick yarn is best)
Patternspattern books are available at craft stores.
A fly swatter for each cover
Steps:
Cut two pieces of plastic for each cover. On one piece, stitch the design.
designs are stitched with diagonal stitches similar to half of a cross stitch.
To complete the cover, place the two pieces together and stitch the sides.
leave the bottom open, and a space for the fly swatter handle to fit through the
top.
finish the top and bottom edges with diagonal stitches to match the sides.
Note: plastic canvas and yarn can be used for tissue box covers, book marks, and
many other crafts.
If someone really enjoys this activity, they may enjoy making other items.

Recovering the Spirit
Many women report that their spiritual beliefs support them in crisis and aid in
their recovery. The healing power of prayer has been demonstrated in Bensons re-
search, reported in Timeless Healing: The Power and Biology of Belief.
Women also find spiritual and physical comfort in each others company. Recently
UCLA scientists theorized that women respond to stress with a tend and befriend
behavior, a departure from the decades-old notion of fight or flight response. Heres
how it works: In response to stress, the brain releases oxytocin, which encourages
bonding behavior. Oxytocins bonding effect is enhanced by estrogen, an important
reproductive hormone. Women have higher levels of estrogen than men. Thus, when
were stressed, we are more likely to confide in a friend than duke it out.
Researchers theorize that female stress responses have selectively evolved to maxi-
mize the survival of self and offspring. This tend-and-befriend pattern includes
nurturing our children under stressful circumstances, and making connections
namely, creating and joining social groups for the exchange of resources and to pro-
vide protection. (NIMH)
In a review of studies for the Journal of the American Medical Association, David
Speigel notes that the social environment can have a buffering effect on stress. The
same stressor that when given to an animal who is alone increases plasma cortisol
[flight hormone] levels by fifty per cent, does not increase it at all when the animal
is surrounded by familiar companions. Speigel contends that being well integrated
socially reduces the incidence of death by a two-fold factor.
Books
If you find that your life is dull and lacks luster, reading can stimulate your
imagination and encourage you to broaden your outlook. (Chiazzari)
Dont read? Visit a library. Modern libraries offer more than books: you may find
CDs and audio tapes, magazines, comic books and parenting kits. Surround yourself
with good artborrow those big coffee-table books on travel, art and photographs.
Dont have time to read? Borrow videos and books on tape. Youll walk out with a
full shopping bag, and you didnt blow the budget.
Music
Clinical and experimental studies (Hoffman) have demonstrated that music en-
hances emotional processing and relaxation. Music can relieve anxiety, uplift and
enliven, and stimulate ordered thinking. Making music and listening to music en-
courages the expression of feelings, and brings unconscious emotions to awareness.

Oh Michelle - JACKPOT! I love the fly swatter covers! Hadn't even thought of that. And that Lulu site - wow -- when I finish school and get my own place -- these are things I would love to furnish my home with! I may do 3 swatters with plastic canvas covers and make 3 into flowers -- I LOVE both ideas! Thanks so much for finding them!
