Anyone have any simple way to doctor up baked beans? I was thinking of adding chopped onion, warming them up and then some mustard added in.

I add BBQ sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and bake them for about 45 mins in the oven. YUM-O!

My mom used to buy canned beans and add tomato paste, mustard, brown sugar, and bacon. GOOD eats!!!

Bake them...what a delicious idea! I was planning to warm them on the stove! (Why don't we have a smilie that hits himself in the head? Duh?)

Oh yeah I forgot about bacon, but I also brown some ground beef and put it in to my baked beans.

To heat on the stove you can just add 3 squirts of ketchup, 1/2 squirt of mustard, and about a tablespoon of brown sugar.

My mom always does mustard, brown sugar and molasses.

I saute onions in bacon grease until they are browned and add brown sugar, ketchup, mustard and a shot of worcestershire sauce. I don't know why I bother to buy canned baked beans when I do the same with plain old pork and beans!

Thanks, ladies. Those are great ideas! I think we'll be having lots of beans this summer!
I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I'll have to work with what I have in the house because I already shopped on Saturday.
Thanks again! You guys are great!

This is how I make baked beans for company, not a weeknight supper. ;)

Karen, seriously! That is why its just a hint of finely minced. I mean REALLY fine! It adds flavor without there being big ass pieces of green pepper up in there!

Hmmmm.... if you say so. Maybe I'll give it a try next time and let you know.

This reminds me of my college boyfriend's crazy, CRAZY roommate.

He used to mix lots of canned/boxed things together and make...err...meals. One of his favorites was to whip up some store brand macaroni and cheese (with just water - no milk, no butter) and then dump in a can of baked beans and mix it up.

Mo, you might want to try this for a change of pace. :right:

No! No green beans, baked beans.

You are right - bell pepper in green beans :nono: (although I think I have seen red bell pepper with green beans and it was okay?)

Bell pepper (finely minced so the kids don't notice it) in baked beans :eat:

Ahhh, man... you totally caught me. I meant baked beans but Aki must've been on my mind. :) Are you a proofreader in real life? :D

Ha! I wasn't sure what you meant! But bell pepper in green beans does sound gaggy, especially if you also add ketchup and mustard and sweetener. Bell pepper is a pretty common ingredient for baked beans down here. :)

Totally not 'up here' unless I am out of the loop which is entirely possible....After all, aren't we the inventors of 'BOSTON' baked beans? :D

Wow, I never thought a baked bean thread would have so many posts! Thanks, girls! I made them with what I had in the house - onion, mustard and brown sugar! MIL went back for seconds! (Points for me!) We had them AGAIN tonight. Two of the large cans seem to multiply once you open them! Leftovers, anyone?
