I blame Chrissy's baby. I keep seeing the name "Wonton" so much, that I'm craving them. :D
They're fun, and suprisingly easy to make (if you buy the pre-made wrappers at the store).
I haven't cooked them yet...I'm putting them in a soup tonight. I'll report back later. lol
Just thought I'd share. I'm easily excited.

Wontons! Qwoot!
"Wotons" was funnier. I shouldn't have edited my post.
Well, the wontons were good, but I didn't care for them in the soup. The soup was kind of bland, and the wontons were very fragile. One of them tore open and then the rest of the soup was not very pretty because it had little bits of filling floating all in it.
Since I had extra wontons, I decided to experiment and fry some in a pan, like pot stickers. These were REALLY good. I think I'll do it that way from now on. Mmmmmmm.

Wow, I am impressed ! I tried to make eggrolls once, total disaster!
What recipe did you use?
These were pretty easy! I saw it in a magazine article about letting your children help in the kitchen, so it's supposed to be a kid-friendly recipe (this was in the 12-and-up category.) I figured if a 12 year old could do it, surely I could.
These are the wontons (well, the recipe says "dumplings" but I'm calling them wontons, because I'm stubborn):

The only difference is, I used ground pork (which I precooked) instead of shrimp, because the shrimp prices were outrageous at my store.
And I left out the cilantro because I don't care for it. I did use the basil though.
And here was the soup, (in case anyone is curious) which I didn't care for:

It wasn't bad, but after all that work, it just tasted like plain ole' chicken broth to me. :dunno:

KP do you subscribe to "Everyday Food?" You might really like that mag if you don't already get it.
I got an issue of that magazine in the mail. I'm not going to subscribe or use it so if anyone wants it, PM me your address and I'll send it on to you.

Are wonton wrappers the same things crab rangoons are made with? That's something I would really like to try...what's the filling...cream cheese, minced green onion, shredded crab.
Oh, god...
Sorry, I didn't see this last night!
I think they're the same thing. They taste like it to me. In fact I mentioned to Conn last night that I could easily make crab rangoons out of these wrappers.
They may be a tad thinner, but they'd work just fine.
An Asian friend taught me how to make Spring Rolls but I'm still scared to try. It would be a nice surprise for B though.

So. I had some leftover wrappers, so I tried to make crab rangoons tonight.
:indiff:
They kept exploding everywhere. It's like the cheese would just melt a hole right through the wrapper and leak everywhere, and the oil would start popping and cracking violently from the filling. Thank goodness I had on an apron.
My kitchen is covered with grease now. It went everywhere.
Soooo, if I'm ever brave enough to try this again, I would double up the wrappers (use them 2-ply) to try to prevent leakage.....or look online for troubleshooting advice.
I did have 4 that turned out alright...and they DID taste good.
And Conn's taking me out for dinner now.

Wontons....drool. Those sound so good, especially fried. I'm allergic to shrimp (and any kind of crustacean), so I couldn't do shrimp. Has anyone made these with any other kind of meat? What did you use? How did they turn out?

I made them with ground pork instead of shrimp, and they turned out very good.
I think they'd be good with chicken too.

So...we went out for Chinese tonight. And I ordered rangoons.
I looked closely at them, and I am certain that I saw 2 layers of the dough.
So now I know.

That's what happens when you spend a lot of time in "TTC".
Is that why I found it so funny?

Maybe....I dunno....
I like adding "-age" on the end of verbs, to make nouns. Leakage, suckage, pukage, etc.

If you do it with pork, I would recommend pre-cooking it before putting it in the wontons, because it gives off a lot of grease as it cooks.
Otherwise your wontons would be full of grease!
