Like Sonny's family we went geocaching for the first time today. We got a late start because we decided to go get a handheld GPS unit so we have it to go other places besides the one close to our house.
There is one less than a mile from our house so we walked out there. Here is the family heading down the street, we are right in front of our house, all those woods at the end of the street is where we go quad riding

Here are the old cranberry bogs behind my house.

A dissapointed Sam. But we will go back and find it another day.

Next time we know to bring the tick repellent, already found two of the little suckers.
DH is already thinking of places to hide our own cache. I knew he would like it.

I wanted to add a great big THANK YOU to Kate for introducing this to us.
Even though we didn't find the cache we had a good time taking a hike.
We had taken a pin from the township we live in and a bottlecap from Australia that Shimmerfly sent me for my Son's collection. I had put a note with it that it came from Australia. I will save these to put in that cache because it says it is small and can only fit small things like coins. We will find it!!!!!

Ticks!?:yikes: Ugh.. I just pulled up a weed in my yard and grossed out when I saw a slug. [/city girl]
I hope you find the cache next timeDan's favorite pastime: pouring salt on slugs and watching them disintegrate.

I'm not sure what geocaching is. :wtf: Is it finding something again that you've buried?
Looks like a fun day anyway. :)

Ummmmm....you sound so nonchalant about that.
:shudder: I think I would die if I found a tick on me.
Woot! I really hope you find the next one-- pick a one star that got found recently, and have fun :D

Ticks are a way of life around here, I live in the Pine Barrens of NJ.
DS was taking a bath and found two on his "buddies". Poor little guy.
Katie, this one was found the day before, it said it was easy to find but hard to get to :dunno: I looked up another one that is not far from our house and looks like it is a little easier to find.
Shim, geocaching is finding something that someone else placed somewhere, using GPS coordinates to find it. www.geocaching.com (http://www.geocaching.com)
Kate wrote a great article about it.
we looked for the same one three days in a row and never found it-- Manda actaully has a lot better "geo-sense" then me, she will look around and pick out where it is from a distance, I will look in every nook and cranny before I find it. Now I stand back and let her look!
Cranberry bogs look very cool, I would love to see them. My sister (CT) warned me about the ticks.
I can't wait to hear when you go again.

The crandberry bogs behind my house are abandoned, they don't use them anymore, but I am surrounded by other bogs. I drive by one on my way to drop the kids off from school, it is so gorgeous in the mornings, I should take some pics. I love it when they are out their harvesting with all the cranberries floating. It looks like the Ocean Spray commericial with the guys standing in the bog talking about the "Ninja Fruit", that commercial cracks me up.
If you guys faint at ticks I would hate to see what happens if you ever got chiggers, I have never had them but DS had them last year, yuck.
I had a tick on me this morning that I missed last night, sometimes they are very tiny and hard to see. DH had to take it off. I hate them but I have grown up dealing with ticks so it is not that big of a deal for us.
Is there anything you can do to avoid them? Like snug jeans at the ankles? We will be hiking in CT and I would love to avoid them on the kids.

Yeah, there are things like putting your socks over your jeans, wear longs sleeves with cuffs, wear a hat. There are also tick repelents. I need to read up on them and find a good one that is safe for kids. I didn't really think about it this time, I thought it would be too early for ticks but I guess not, next time I will make sure we are better protected.

Kate, ticks like warmth so when you get in from playing outside, even just in the yard, check behind the ears, hairline at the back of the neck, armpits, crotch, places like that. I found one last year on my upper, upper thigh. :ewww: To get them off the best way is to light a match, blow it out and use the hot end to get the tick to withdraw it's pincers. You can also use tweezers, just go slow and make sure the pincers came off/out as well.
yuck. thanks! we will remember this after hiking.

It is really nice where I live, alot of people are surprised when the realize it is New Jersey, it is the mostly densly populated state, but you would be surprised to see the miles and miles of forest in our state. I live in the southern part of Jersey but I grew up and graduated in the northern part where most of the people are.

I've had chiggers. NO biggie to me except they itch like a bitch.
We have ticks all over Indiana, but I've been really lucky.
